SSC CGL Post Preference Guide 2025: Best Job for You

What’s in it ???

Hello Friends! Congratulations to all my serious aspirants.

If you are reading this my blog, it means you have either cleared SSC CGL Tier -1 or you are preparing very seriously for it. We all study not only … Math’s, but also English, and Reasoning for months. You work hard day and night. But let me tell you one harsh truth.

Many students fail NOT because they got less marks, but because they filled the “Post Preference Form” wrongly.

I have seen students who got Top 100 Rank but they are crying today. Why ??? Because they wanted to live in Delhi with their parents, but they chose “Excise Inspector” just for show – off and got posted in Chennai or Kerala. Now they are eating Idli – Dosa and missing home food!

On the other side, I have seen students with low ranks living happily in their home town because they chose the right post like “Tax Assistant”.

So, filling the preference form is the most important decision of your life. It decides where next you will live for the next 30 years.

In this my small blog, on the other hand, I will kill your confusion. I will act like your elder brother and tell you which job is best for your personality. Do you want a AC office ? Do you want a uniforms ??? Do you want extra money (under table? No, I meant salary!)? Let's discuss everything.

1: The “Peace Lovers” (Desk Jobs / 9-to-5)

There is a category of students who says, “Sir, I don’t want power. I don’t want gun. I just want a peaceful life. I want to go to office at 9 AM, come back at 5:30 PM, and spend time with my family.”

as a result , If you are this type of person, or if you are preparing for UPSC / State PCS along with the job, then Desk Job are for you.

Here i am going to share some best options for you, so are you interested to know more about it..

1. Assistant Section Officer (ASO) in CSS

CSS stands for Central Secretariat Service. This is the most popular choice for toppers.

Role Overview: Your day-to-day tasks involve working in various Ministries (like Home Ministry or Education Ministry) in Delhi. Notably, regarding stability, you will never be transferred out of the capital. Additionally, the office environment is top-tier with posh, AC rooms.

Primary Advantage: Lifetime Delhi posting is the biggest draw. This ensures that your career remains rooted in one place without the stress of moving cities.

2. Divisional Accountant (DA) in CAG

This is the ” Hidden Gem “ for you . Many people don’t know about this , but smart people chose it.

  • The Work: You will be posted in state irrigation or PWD offices. You are the “Financial Advisor” there. Consequently, contractor bills cannot be passed without your signature.
  • Power: Even though it is a desk job, you have huge respect (and power) in the office because you control the money flow.
  • Independence: In other jobs, you work under a boss. Here, you are your own boss in that office. Very less interference.

3. Auditor (in CAG or CGDA)

  • The Work: Checking files and accounts. Moreover, it is a very peaceful job with zero work pressure.
  • Good for UPSC: If you want to study for IAS, this is the best job. You get lots of free time. Nobody disturbs you.
  • Posting: You can get posting anywhere in India, but transfers are possible.

Who should choose Desk Jobs???

  1. Girls who want work-life balance.
  2. Boys who are preparing for UPSC.
  3. People who hate travelling and dust.
  4. People who want fixed weekends off.

2: The “Power & Uniform Lovers” (Field Jobs)

Now comes the second category. The boys who is like me or who is watched movies like Singham or Special 26. They say, “Sir, I want power. When I walk , people should salute me.”

For You, SSC CGL has some amazing “Inspector” posts. But remember, power come with Work Pressure.

1. Inspector (GST & Central Excise)

This is the most famous post. Before GST, it was called Excise Inspector.

  • The Uniform: Yes, you get a Khaki uniform (with 3 stars). But wait! You don’t wear it every day. You wear it only on raids or special duty like Republic Day. Mostly you wear formal clothes.
  • The Work: The Work: It is a mix of desk and field. Specifically, you have to check…
  • The Reality: Earlier, there was a lot of “extra income” (you know what I mean). But after GST and online systems, that has reduced a lot. Don’t join this job thinking you will become a millionaire in 2 years. Join for the respect.

2. CBI Sub-Inspector

This is the most powerful job in CGL.

  • The Work: Investigation of high-profile cases. Murders, corruption, bank frauds.
  • The Pros: The ID card is enough. Specifically, if you show your CBI ID, people get scared.
  • The Cons (Read Carefully): There is NO personal life. You might have to work for 48 hours continuously. No Saturday-Sunday off. It is very high stress. For example, if you are married, your wife might fight with you because you are never home. Choose this only if you have passion for crazy adventure.

3. Examiner (Inspector in Customs)

This is the often “Toppers’ Choice” for high salary.

  • The Work: You work in Ports (where ships come) or Airports. You check the goods coming from foreign countries.
  • The Money: The “Overtime Allowance” is very high here. Also, since you deal with sensitive import-export, it is considered a very lucrative post.
  • Location: You will only get posted in Coastal Cities (Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Goa, Vizag). If you are from Delhi or Bihar, you will never get home posting. Keep this in mind.

4. Preventive Officer (PO)

  • The Work: The white uniform looks very dashing. Furthermore, it is a truly adventurous job.
  • The Style: The white uniform looks very dashing. It is a adventurous job.

Why Should you choose Fields jobs???

  1. “Those who get bored sitting in one chair.”
  2. “Candidates seeking social status…”
  3. “Individuals who are physically fit.”

3: The “Home Posting” Puzzle (Tax Assistant vs. Inspector)

This is the situations where 99% students make mistakes in their life.

Let’s say belong to Palwal(Haryana). You are got a decent rank (e.g…, Rank 2000).

Specifically, You have to choice in this;

  1. Excise Inspector (But because rank is 2000, you will get Chennai zone).
  2. Tax Assistant (Because this is a lower post, you will easily get Kanpur zone).
What Should you choose???
1. Scenario A: You choose Inspector. You go to Chennai.
Good: High Salary (Level-7), 3 Stars.
Bad: Language problem, food problem, far from parents. Furthermore, You will spend 10-15 years there before coming back to North India. You will spend half your salary on flight tickets to visit home.

2. Scenario B: You choose Tax Assistant. You stay in Palwal.
Good: You live in your own house. You save rent money. You eat mom's food. You have your friends.
Bad: Lower Salary (Level-4). No "Inspector" tag initially.
The Twist: A Tax Assistant becomes an Inspector in 4-5 years through departmental exam. So, in 5 years, you will be an Inspector IN KANPUR!

My Advice for You:

If you are very attached to your family, compromise on the Post, But don’t compromise on location. “Inspector in Kerala”. sound good on social media, but “Tax Assistant In Home” feels good in real life

4: The Medical Hurdle (Color Blindness)

Please pay attention! This is serious. If you are Color Blind (you cannot differentiate between Red and Green colors), you are BANNED from many jobs.

However, if you hide this and fill the form, you will later fail the medical test.

Jobs BANNED for Color Blind People:

  1. Excise Inspector
  2. Preventive Officer
  3. Examiner
  4. CBI Sub-Inspector
  5. Inspector in Narcotics

Jobs ALLOWED (Safe) for Color Blind People:

  1. ASO in CSS (Best option)
  2. Auditor
  3. Divisional Accountant
  4. Tax Assistant
  5. ASO in Railway (Allowed now)

Check the official notification once, but mostly Field job’s are banned for you.

5: Salary Comparison (Money Matters)

Finally, let’s look at the money.

Grade Pay (GP)Post NameIn-Hand Salary (Approx in X-City)
4600 GPInspector, ASO, DA₹72,000 – ₹78,000
4200 GPDiv. Accountant, JSO₹60,000 – ₹65,000
2800 GPAuditor, Accountant₹45,000 – ₹50,000
2400 GPTax Assistant, UDC₹38,000 – ₹42,000

Don’t just run after 4600 GP. In fact, sometimes a 2800 GP job…

Final Conclusion From My Side: How to Fill the Form?

In summary, all my friends, here is my final checklist for you.. Before you applying the preference from, sit alone in a room corner and ask yourself 3 questions.

  1. Do I need Home State? (If YES -> Put lower posts of your zone on top, or CSS for Delhi).
  2. Do I need Power/Uniform? (If YES -> Put Excise/Examiner on top, but be ready to go to South/East India).
  3. Do I want to prepare for UPSC? (If YES -> Put Auditor or DA on top).

Summary Suggestion for You :

  • First, for Toppers: ASO in CSS (if you want Delhi). Alternatively, choose Examiner if you want a coastal life.
  • For Average Rank: Tax Assistant in Home State is better than Inspector in far away state.
  • For Girls: ASO in CSS or Auditor are safest and best.

I hope this blog cleared your confusion. Don’t make a blunder in the form. Best of luck for your future final result!
